The EN 15085 series defines the quality requirements for the welded manufacture of railway vehicles and components, the classification of weld seams (performance and safety classes) and the certification rules for manufacturers. TCDD, TÜRASAŞ, metro/tram manufacturers and European railway OEMs require EN 15085-2 certification from their suppliers.
Certification levels
- CL1: Components with high safety requirements (bogies, frames, draw gear) — comprehensive welding coordination (IWE)
- CL2: Components with medium safety requirements
- CL3: Components with low safety requirements
- CL4: Design/purchasing organisations without welding production
Scope
- Incorporating weld performance classes (CP A–D) and inspection classes (CT 1–4) into design documents
- Establishing the responsible welding coordinator structure and preparing competence evidence
- Completion of WPQR/WPSs, welder certificates and NDT personnel qualifications
- Creation of welding plans, quality plans and production records
- Coordination of the certification body audit and continuous surveillance
